The CEL Day about Education was a fantastic success. Students from Mott and Columbus Elementary Schools learned about topics from study skills, the environment, black history, and writing skills. They spent the day with 17 college freshman, who helped them through the lessons. The day was led by Kathrine Avila and several Bonner Scholars assisted: Narolyn Paredes, David Karas, Michael Brower, Sejour Stephens and Alyssa Brent. Bonner volunteers also joined in, Rachel and Jessica. Pat Donohue, Director of the Bonner Center, and Tabitha DeAngelo, addressed the freshman class before their day, covering topics about urban education and citizenship.
"I taught about prominent African Americans in history, ranging from Dred Scott to Jesse Jackson, to President Obama. We discussed with students what these leaders did and what it meant to people of the time and to the students themselves. While some kids were overwhelmed by the seriousness of the topic, many were enthusiastic to learn about black history and how it pertained to their lives" (Michael Brower, Bonner Scholar, Class of 09).
