On Saturday, October 4th Bonner Scholars Andrew Amadeo and Jon Waltz led three first year students to their Community Engaged Learning experience. They cleaned out a community garden and a small area of Trenton, known as the Greenway Project (corner of Bellevue and Calhoun). Armed with garbage bags, gloves and gardening clippers, the students left campus early and worked into the afternoon.
Community Gardens are important, especially in urban areas. They help improve the quality of life not only by providing a place for neighbors to gather, but beautify the neighborhood and encourage self reliance -- as described by the American Community Garden Association.
Our community contact, George Bradley, said the students worked really hard to complete part of the community garden. He commented they were very polite, on time and he was very appreciative of their work. Additional volunteers are needed to complete the project. If you are interested in volunteering, please email us at bonner@tcnj.edu.
The students remarked that they had a lot of fun and Jon and Andrew, the leaders for the day, made the job "easy and smoothâ.
