Hunger Team

Hunger continues to be an issue that plagues residents of our state. Recent statistics indicate that 1 of 11 individuals in New Jersey do not have enough to eat. This equates to over 764,000 men, women, and children who go to bed hungry. In Mercer County alone, an estimated 8.5% of the county's population is suffering from this great need.

Food is one of the most basic necessities, yet there are so many who are not able to eat three meals a day as the rest of us are. In addition to this, families who cannot afford food also tend to have great difficulty paying their bills, and often wind up on the streets.

Our mission is to work with community organizations addressing the issue of hunger, and to help increase awareness and mobilize students to help reverse the cycle of poverty.

The Hunger Team primarily serves at two sites:

Trenton Area Soup Kitchen

The Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK) is a non-profit organization with the primary goal of feeding the homeless and poor of Trenton, New Jersey. Through providing daily meals, TASK hopes to help patrons achieve self-sufficiency and a better quality of life. TASK also has a Hygene Program and an Adult Education Program that includes an Adult Literacy Program and a GED Program. TASK leads the non-profit sector in New Jersey for the number of participants who receive their GEDs.

As a result of the current economic crisis and the ensuing need in our local communities, TASK now serves over 3,000 meals per week.

Farmers vs. Hunger

Farmers vs. Hunger is a cooperative consisting of approximately 60 farmers, frocery stores, and produce supplies located throughout the State of New Jersey, who collectively contribute over 1 million pounds of food annually to non-profit organizations in need.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

The Hunger Team will now utilize this site to coordinate volunteers for our weekly trips to TASK. Click on the link below to view the opportunities available for each week. If there are any openings that you are able to fill, please email TCNJBonnerHungerTeam@gmail.com to be put on the roster.

Donations can be dropped off at the Bonner Center if you cannot bring them to TASK. Remember to label them!
